He is this week’s Wheel of Kurkjian winner. Although Jimmie Foxx, three time MVP, two time World Series winner gave Gehrig a run for his money… I just couldn’t ignore Gehrig’s World Series success and his large strand of batting success. His farewell speech will forever go down as one of the greatest sports speeches of all time. The first baseman also has one hell of a story. Gehrig went 9-17 (.529) with three home runs and nine RBIs. In 1932, the Yankees faced Chicago and won in four games. Oh yeah, he also had two additional hits, drove in nine runs and batted. Gehrig, in 17 plate appearances, was walked six times and hit four home runs. Two specific years stick out in my mind specifically. In seven World Series appearances, Gehrig batted. And as we know, every Yankee has an even more stellar numbers in the playoffs. Gehrig has gone down as one of my top five Yankees of all-time, hands down. Ten of those years he hit at least 30 homers including five forty home run season. In that twelve year stretch, his on-base-percentage never dropped below. In those 17 seasons, Gehrig went twelve straight seasons where he batted. Lou Gehrig played 17 years in baseball, which was a lot considering he only lived until age 37.
